Blinded By Dog Poop – The Problem Is Real!

Meet 8 year old Elisabeth Willoughby, the little girl who was partially blinded by a parasite commonly found in dog poo.

Ecoli, Salmonella, Toxocaria and Giardia can also be found in dog poo as well as cat poo, fox poo and various other animal faeces.

Elisabeth Wanted to go Public to make People Aware of Her Exposure

to the Toxocaria Parasite

Toxocariasis is a rare infection caused by roundworm parasites.  It is spread to humans through infected animal faeces.

Elisabeth’s mother Becky was unaware Elisabeth had any eye problems until she failed her eye test upon starting school.

No one could figure out why Elisabeth failed her eye test, so she was taken to the hospital for further tests.

When he eyes were examined a scar was found on the back of one of her eyeballs, which had damaged her eyesight.

The specialists advised the family it was caused through a worm parasite called Toxocaria that had burrowed it’s way through to the back of the eye.

As the worm parasite called Toxocaria is commonly found in dog and fox poo, there are two ways Elisabeth may have got the parasite inside her…

(1) Mom Becky may have passed it through to her daughter during pregnancy by picking up dog poo, and passing it through her bloodstream to her baby.

(2) Elisabeth may have picked it up when crawling around as a baby and got it inside her then.

Becky says the previous owners of their house had dogs, and is left wondering if any faeces was left behind that she hadn’t known about.

Elisabeth and her Mom want everyone to be aware that…

Children are most at risk of getting Toxocaria and going blind through contact with infected dog poo, as they put their hands in soil and touch their mouths in daily play.

The effects of the Toxocaria parasite doesn’t always show straight away, and can take years before the damage shows.

Common Symptoms of Toxocariasis:

  • Cough
  • Headaches
  • High temperature
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite or weight loss
  • Skin rashes
  • Wheezing or breathing difficulties
  • Seizures (fits)
  • Blurred or cloudy vision, usually only affecting one eye
  • A very red and painful eye

If you own a dog, make sure you worm him regularly and clean up the poo in the yard, including when out and about.
