How To Get Your Dog To Like Having His Toe Nails Clipped At Home

Do you have a dog that runs a mile every time you go to clip his toe nails? Out of frustration many dog owners just pay someone to do this.

With a little patience and sneaky bribes you can actually have your dog enjoying the nail clipping procedure.  It’s easier than you think.

YOU WILL NEED:

Nail clippers – (Make sure they are clippers pacifically for a dog – NOT clippers for human nails)

Dog treats – Treats that your dog loves but doesn’t have often.  (Chicken treats or cheese are often a good choice)

Getting Your Dog To Trust You With The Nail Clippers

When you do the steps below – make sure you wait a minute or so between each step, so your dog will start to realize the treat only comes out when the clippers come out.

(1) Relax your Dog –  Show your dog the nail clippers.  Let him sniff them if he wants to.  Then give him a treat.

When he has finished the treat, put the clippers away nearby.  Repeat these steps a few times.

(2) Get your dog used to being near the clippers – Call your dog over to sit with you.  Show him the clippers, then place the clippers near his paw area.

Give him a treat while the clippers are near his paw.  Repeat these steps a few times.

(Make sure you give the treat AFTER the clippers are near your dog – By doing this you are reinforcing the message – the treat only comes after the clippers come out.)

(3) Get your dog used to being touched with the clippers – Call your dog over to sit with you.  Show him the clippers, then gently touch his claw area with the clippers.

Follow with a treat.  Repeat these steps a few times.

(4) Get your dog used to all claws being touched with the clippers – Make sure your dog is still relaxed.  Pick his paw up.  Gently touch each claw with the clippers – WITHOUT CUTTING THEM.

Follow with a treat.  Repeat these steps a few times.

Cut a very small tip off each nail, making sure you avoid the quick.

(This step may have to be done over a few days – EG; cut one nail a day if your dog is frightened or nervous about the clipping)

Give your dog a treat after each nail is clipped.
